Low-touch technologies

GETTouched

Anybody who thinks that touch screens have only existed since the first iPhone conquered the market in 2007 is wrong. In fact, this technology was launched as early as the 1980s and has since become a successful part of our everyday lives. Whether for smartphones, ticket machines at a bus stop or the control panel for a coffee machine, all these things want us to touch them gently so that they can provide us with their services.

However, one touch screen is not automatically the same as any other. This technology can be divided into resistive and capacitive touch screens. The difference here is that one screen responds to pressure and the other one to a change in the electric field.

Capacitive switch

Capacitive touch screens

The relevant process is simply activated by touching the operating screen. It has a conductive layer on it. Constant voltage is generated here using alternating current. If it is then touched by a mere finger or a stylus pen, the electric field is interrupted and some kind of interaction is triggered.

resistive touchscreen

Resistive touch screens

This technology requires pressure from outside to trigger the command that is needed. If you press a certain point on the operating surface, two conductive layers within the screen are connected to each other. The electrical resistance is detected to obtain the relevant position and the desired interaction is triggered.

projected capacitive switch

Projected capacitive touch screens

Two layers insulated from each other with a conductive grid pattern are required to trigger a switching operation. There is a driver on one layer and a sensor on the other one. If the surface is touched, the voltage in the capacitor changes and triggers a signal.

Find the right solution for you

The main benefits of touch technology at a glance:

  • A touch screen may cost more than a traditional screen, but it is still less than a sliding or fold-out keyboard. This makes it possible to minimize hardware costs.

  • The fact that there is no need for an additional input device saves space – both next to and in the screen. This means that you can use a bigger display, install a larger rechargeable battery and the design concepts of a smaller device, among other things.
  • Low-contact operating technologies are dustproof and waterproof thanks to the sealed surface. This means they can be cleaned quickly and simply and it is hard for dirt particles to cling to the smooth surface.

We also make use of these benefits and have constantly developed applications in the field of capacitive operating technology. Our portfolio ranges from individual capacitive switches  to complete operating panels based on touch. In addition to ready-to-use catalog products like keyboards, we also offer customized individual solutions.

Complying with strict hygiene measures saves lives, particularly in hygiene-sensitive areas. To prevent invisible sources of danger, special technologies are required when manufacturing machines, including data input devices. Capacitive operating elements are a viable option here. By having an even transition from the touch surface to the technology platform, it is possible to thoroughly clean the unit. IP69K class protection can be achieved in certain circumstances.

  • Dirt, lubricants and coolants, sparks, huge temperature ranges – they can all form part of everyday life in production-related settings. As a result, the requirements for the robustness of the working equipment used there are extremely high. Capacitive operating panels are predestined for use in these kinds of adverse environments. The important usage conditions like air humidity, temperature, possible mechanical effects etc. must be included in the concept for the touch panel and the operating element must be designed to match the circumstances.

Our eyes are involved too. There are many ways of visually designing different touch panels – not just printing graphics or photo-like displays behind the glass, but also providing background lighting with a broad range of colors.

Our portfolio of capacitive operating panels is varied and has the following impressive features:

  • Using alternatives like acrylic or artificial stone

  • Available as

    • an individual switch
    • a keypad
    • a keyboard or
    • a touch screen.
  • Operating feedback as an acoustic signal or local vibration

  • Anti-blending effect
  • Haptic design effects possible
  • Improved ease of movement through additional surface treatment
  • Glass thicknesses from 0.8mm up to 3mm
  • Complete resistance to wear through back glass printing
  • Individual dimensions possible
  • Variety of functions like stand-by mode or sensitivity controls
  • Combination of touch screens with front holder, display and enclosure
