Glass and industry? Tough ambient conditions and a supposedly fragile material? How is it possible to combine both of them? We started tackling this issue 15 years ago. However, it was not our aim to use glass as a material in a commercial/industrial setting. We were more interested in the far-reaching opportunities of creating operating interfaces with capacitive sensors. Glass emerged as the suitable front panel during the course of the research and development process – and not just for physical reasons.

It became clear that glass can withstand challenging conditions like extreme temperatures, mechanical effects as well as dust and dirt to an excellent degree. It is crucially important as the support material for the graphic design and the electronic functional elements. The general level of acceptance for typing and swiping also increased because of the advent of smartphones.

NumPad keypads and capacitive touch screens were just the initial stages and a broad range of products gradually developed from them. The common factor was using glass as the operating surface. GETT now has a wide range of items in this field. It includes standardized components for insertion and ready-to-use devices like keyboards. How does it work?

Most of the products in this category use the capacitive operating principle. The operating surfaces of smartphones, self-service vending machines or modern ceramic hobs are obvious examples of this. Functions are handled by individual sensors, interconnected sensors and matrix or area sensors. The GETT portfolio in this sector includes capacitive switches for insertion, keypads and keyboards, touch screens and plug-and-play keyboards for desks.

Switches for insertion (M22) with optical sensors are the latest variant in this range of products. Thanks to the glass surface, a ray of light is emitted and an operating event is detected via this. In contrast to capacitive sensors, which require physical “touch,” these switches work without any touch at all. Their lighting reacts with the operating event in each case and this may involve multiple stages and be defined by distance.
