Repaired instead of replaced: How RWE gains efficiency, sustainability and trust through repair
How RWE Nuclear GmbH optimises its processes with innovative solutions – RWE Nuclear GmbH, a subsidiary of RWE AG, is responsible for the safe decommissioning of nuclear power plants in Germany.
In this Customer Success Story, we demonstrate how we sustainably repaired rather than replaced the membrane keypads that have been in use at RWE Nuclear GmbH for some time – contributing to resource conservation and reducing operating costs.
Problem: Special component defective – replacement unavailable
During the decommissioning of a nuclear power plant, all components must meet the highest technical standards. At RWE Nuclear GmbH, a specially designed membrane keypad had been in operation since 2005 – it controls the fuel element loading machine and is therefore an essential part of a safety-critical system. After many years of trouble-free operation, one of the keypads partially failed. Purchasing a new one was not an option:
“The keypad is no longer produced. An alternative replacement part might have required approval from the authorities.”
A replacement would therefore have involved considerable effort, time delays and regulatory obstacles.
Action: Repair as a sustainable and pragmatic solution
The decision was deliberately made in favour of repairing the keypad – a solution that proved convincing from both a technical and operational perspective.
“We usually prefer repair – and in this case, it was clearly the most sensible solution.”
The keypad was completely refurbished. In addition to restoring full functionality, the worn membrane surface was also replaced – an extra service that came as a pleasant surprise:
“Excellent – the keypad works perfectly again, and the new overlay gives it an upgraded look.”
The communication during the repair process was also particularly appreciated:
“Everything was clearly explained – even illustrated with pictures – showing what was repaired. We received excellent support and information throughout.”
Effect: Full functionality – without time-consuming or costly adjustments
Thanks to the repair, the keypad was quickly and reliably put back into operation – without bureaucratic effort or system modifications.
For RWE, this meant:
- Cost savings
- Time savings
- Avoidance of regulatory complexity
- Preservation of proven technology
“Our specific requirements were fully addressed – with clear coordination throughout the process and absolute reliability.”
For other companies using specialised or long-serving system components, repair represents a genuine alternative:
“For products that are no longer available, offering a repair or alternative right away saves an enormous amount of time.”
