Power Outlets and Standards: What to Consider When Setting Up in the USA

Expanding into the US market is an exciting venture that offers not only great opportunities but also new challenges. Today, I’d like to share another chapter of our journey and provide insights that may be useful for other businesses considering a similar step.

Unexpected Discoveries During an Infrastructure Check

Sometimes, it’s the small details that make all the difference. That was certainly the case when I had to make a last-minute visit to our new production facility. The reason? A meeting with the air conditioning company to determine whether a defect was covered under warranty. At the same time, we were dealing with a technical question that many companies face when moving into older buildings: Are our power outlets properly grounded?

At first glance, something seemed off – some outlets had only two wires instead of the usual three. However, after a thorough inspection by certified electricians, we discovered that they were indeed correctly grounded. The reason lies in an older construction method where grounding is achieved through the outlet box and its screws. This approach is still permitted in the US, even though modern standards typically rely on three-wire grounding.

What We Can Learn from This

For businesses looking to expand into the US market, this example highlights the importance of familiarising themselves with local building regulations and standards. Unlike in Europe, the US has numerous regional differences, making careful planning and collaboration with local experts essential.

However, understanding these differences can also present advantages. Older buildings, which are often more affordable, can be just as functional as newer ones – provided that you understand the technical conditions and make effective use of them. Here are a few tips for dealing with similar challenges:

  1. Consult Experts – Local electricians and construction companies are familiar with regional standards and can help clarify uncertainties.
  2. Check Technical Documentation – Infrastructure details are often available in building records or from property owners.
  3. Utilise Available Resources – Platforms such as Houzz or HomeAdvisor offer valuable information and connections for construction and renovation projects in the US.

Inspiration for Your Expansion

For European businesses, the diversity of building practices in the US can be both a challenge and a source of inspiration. The interior design of a facility is not just a technical matter but also an opportunity to reflect your company’s values and culture in its setup. Whether you opt for a modern industrial aesthetic, sustainable materials, or a more traditional look – the possibilities are vast.

Our experience has shown that careful planning and the right partners are key. At GETT North America, we focus on well-thought-out solutions to ensure a smooth expansion – whether in infrastructure, logistics, or production. While the journey can be challenging at times, we firmly believe that every obstacle is a step towards success.
