A Day in Houston: A Visit from a Jack-of-All-Trades Service Provider

Today, I want to share an interesting day at our branch in Houston. I had a meeting with an employee from a company that offers a wide range of services – from wall removal and cutlery socket installation to light fixture setup. Although the offerings sounded tempting, the visit left a mixed impression.

A Jack of All Trades or a Master of Mess?

As Managing Director of GETT North America, I see every day how important professionalism and specialization are. Today’s visit reminded me once again that it’s often better to specialize in one area and excel in it rather than offer everything and fail to stand out in any. The employee I met today didn’t give the impression of being an expert in all the areas they covered. It seemed more like he might improvise as needed to cover all the services offered.

This experience can serve as a valuable lesson for our business partners in Germany. We often tend to expand our portfolios to attract more customers. But sometimes, the opposite is true – less is more. A clear focus on our core competencies and delivering excellence in them could be the key to success.

Professional Image Matters

Another point that struck me during this meeting was the importance of a professional image. The disorganized impression and lack of expertise in various areas were rather off-putting. For GETT North America, it’s essential that our partners and service providers impress not only with their skills but also with their appearance. This starts with clear communication about what they excel at and ends with a professional and competent appearance in every customer interaction.

Tips for Our Business Partners in Germany

  1. Specialization over Generalization: Focus on your strengths and build your expertise in those areas. A clear focus can be your unique selling point and set you apart from the competition.
  2. Professional Presentation: First impressions count. Make sure your presentations and proposals always look professional, whether in person or online.
  3. Honesty and Transparency: Communicate clearly and honestly about what you offer and what you don’t. Customers appreciate transparency and are more likely to trust service providers who know and communicate their limits.
  4. Continuous Education: Stay up-to-date in your specialized areas. Ongoing training and the pursuit of excellence should be part of your company philosophy.

Our day in Houston showed us that it’s sometimes better to focus on a few things and do them exceptionally well. This strategy can also help our partners in Germany achieve long-term success.

With this in mind – here’s to a focused and successful future!
